Move-In

Directions and Steps for Moving

Orient yourself amidst the hustle and bustle of moving. See what you have to do, step-by-step, for a successful move.

Your Fall 2022 Step-By-Step Move-In

  1. Due to COVID-19 health considerations and capacity limitations, students and their families will need to strictly adhere to assigned move-in dates and times.
  2. Arrivals/move-ins prior to or later than your assigned Move-In date and time during Move-In weekend cannot be accommodated.
  3. Move-In Day is a masked event. All students and guests are expected to wear a mask while indoors throughout the day in all campus locations.
  4. Up to two (2) guests may accompany students during Move-In Day.  Sticker badges will be provided for guests in the student’s check-in packet.

Confirm Vaccination/Booster/Exemption Compliance

The University of California, including the UC Riverside campus, requires that all students, faculty and staff have an:

up-to-date COVID-19 vaccine/booster

or

campus-approved exemption

One of these must be on file in order to attend classes, work or reside in UC-affiliated facilities.  To be clear, no student will be issued keys or be permitted to move into campus housing if this requirement is not fulfilled in advance of arrival to UCR.

Take A Pre-Arrival COVID-19 Test

All students moving into new campus housing accommodations (both vaccinated and unvaccinated) must take a COVID-19 test prior to arriving to campus for Move-In.  The timeline below indicates the timeframe for taking a COVID-19 test and recording a negative COVID-19 test result based on your assigned community move-in date.

What Type Of Test?

Your COVID-19 test may be either a self-administered, over-the-counter (OTC) home antigen test, or a professionally-administered lab test.

Recommended: An over-the-counter (OTC) home antigen, TMA, LAMP, OR NAAT test can be taken no more than two (2) days prior to your move-in day.  This is the quickest way to get an accurate test result.

Alternatively, you can take a PCR or RT-PCR test no more than 3 days prior to Move-In.  Be sure your lab results can be returned quickly enough.

How To Get A Test Kit

OTC home antigen kits are a covered benefit of all insurance plans (8 kits per person, per month).  They are available at most pharmacies, including Walgreens and CVS.

For your convenience, UCR will have free OTC antigen kits available for pick-up in the front of the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) building (900 University Ave. Riverside, CA 92521) from 8:00 am- 4:00 pm on Monday, September 12th through Wednesday, September 14th.  You may temporarily park in Lot 21 for a maximum of 10 minutes during your visit to EH&S to obtain your kit.

How To Record Your Test Result

Once in the Student Health Portal, use the index on the left side of the page and click on Survey Forms.  On the next page, click on Housing Pre-Arrival COVID Screening.  Record your answers to the provided questions.

What To Do If You Test Positive

If you receive a positive pre-arrival COVID-19 test result or have cold/flu symptoms as Move-In day approaches, make the hard choice to stay home and follow appropriate quarantine protocol

Do not come to campus for Move-In.  You can contact the UCR COVID Management Team at (844) 827-6827 (select voice prompt option 1) or UCR Student Health Services at (951) 827-3031 for further guidance regarding COVID-19 or your quarantine.

Do not worry, your space will be waiting for you when you are feeling better and test negative.  We appreciate you helping to keep our campus community safe and setting the right example for others.  Contact the Resident Services Office (RSO) for your assigned community to make arrangements for checking in once you no longer have COVID.

Prepare For Campus COVID Test

Residence Halls Move-Ins Only

Students moving into the following communities only are required to take a PCR saliva test on Move-In Day as part of their check-in process:  Aberdeen-Inverness (A-I), Dundee, Lothian, and Pentland Hills.

Do not make an appointment or take a PCR test if you have tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 90 days.  You will be provided with an antigen test kit in lieu of the PCR test. This is to help avoid false positives from individuals still “shedding" the virus.  Go to "Preparing for a Nasal Swab Antigen Test" below for further instructions.

Preparing For PCR Saliva Sample Collection

  1. Make a COVID-19 Testing appointment and complete a Consent Form here
  2. Use your Move-In Date/Time as your appointment. If the available appointment times do not match your assigned Move-In time, please choose the closest time slot possible.  You may continue your check-in at your assigned Move-In time even if your COVID test appointment time does not match it exactly.
  3. A barcode will be generated during this process.  Please have this barcode available on your smart device at full brightness so that the testing staff can easily scan your barcode and register your test kit
  4. To ensure the quality of the saliva sample and to avoid having to retest due to invalid results, please do not do any of the following for at least 30 minutes prior to your arrival in Lot 30 on your Move-In day:
    • Eat
    • Drink (including water)
    • Smoke/Vape
    • Brush Your Teeth

Preparing For A Nasal Swab Antigen Test

  1. A test kit will be provided and your test will be self-administered.  You may pull into any parking space surrounding your test line while you wait 15 minutes for your test result.
  2. Interpret result based on the Result Reference Guide found in the packaging.
  3. Upload your test result.  Do not throw away your test result until it has been uploaded.
